Self monitoring of blood glucose (SMBG) is a crucial step in the management of Diabetes in the long term. Diabetes is a progressive disease, therefore the sugar levels generally deteriorate over time. SMBG guides the patient in knowing whether the blood sugar control is adequate or needs medical consultation. It also gives the patient control over his/her own chronic illness. While most individuals with early diabetes need not do regular finger prick monitoring, those taking insulin or have advanced diabetes should regularly monitor.
SMBG give important insights to the patient about:
How various foods affect the sugar levels
How exercise and healthy lifestyle is beneficial in maintaining normal sugars
How illness and stress affect your blood sugar readings
To assess whether you are reaching your targets set by the doctor
SMBG can be done using glucometers, which are widely available in the local pharmacies. They are easy to use and generally do not need any calibration. We recommend glucometers which comply with the ISO 2013 standards. There are many advanced glucometers which store the measured glucose data in an app, and give you a trend of your glucose readings.
Although, your doctor will advise you on your personalised blood glucose targets, the international recommendations for the target sugars are:
Fasting blood sugar : 80-130 mg/dl
2 hr Post meal blood sugar : <180 mg/dl
